She was an Egyptian slave who was mistreated by her mistress and consequently fled into the desert. She eventually sat down by a well – exhausted, alone, miserable, and pregnant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eShe didn’t know where to go or what to do. It was here that God found her. She exclaimed, “…You are the God who sees me…” (Genesis 16:13).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe find a similar story in the gospels. Jesus is eating at the house of Simon the Pharisee when a woman, who is described as living a sinful life, kissed His feet and poured perfume on them. It was at this point that Jesus asked Simon, “…Do you see this woman…”? (Luke 7:44).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSimon the Pharisee had failed both to recognise the identity of Jesus but also the significance of what the woman was doing. He was so self-righteous that his entire focus was on the woman’s sin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI wonder how we would have reacted if we had been there. Would we have been as blind or as proud as Simon?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWould we have shown the same grace as Jesus?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDo we judge people before we know their circumstances or hear their story?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDo we see the desperation of the broken people in our world?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDo we see as God sees?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRobert\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Robert Fergusson","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":40567404429394,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0552\/3629\/6786\/files\/2023-07_RFT_TeachingTip-DivineQuestions13.jpg?v=1697425614"},{"product_id":"do-you-still-not-understand","title":"Do you still not understand?","description":"\u003cp\u003eLet me describe the scene. Jesus is in a boat with His disciples where He is attempting to explain ‘the yeast of the Pharisees’ to them. They, of course, misunderstand. They think He is talking about the bread which they have failed to bring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus is amazed at their lack of spiritual perception. He tells them He is not talking about natural bread and reminds them that He has the ability to provide basketfuls. They still don’t know what He is talking about.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, He asks the question, \u003cem\u003e“…Do you still not understand…”\u003c\/em\u003e (Mark 8:21)? It is a classic teacher’s question. I have asked its equivalent on many occasions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, we can’t judge the tone of His voice, but I suspect He was slightly frustrated with the disciples. But would we have been any different if we had been in the boat that day? I doubt it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven now, after years of following Jesus I still often fail to discern what Jesus is saying or doing. Am I still too concerned about own needs?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAm I still distracted by the practical necessities of life?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAm I still too focussed on the temporal realm?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAm I still not remembering what He has done?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAm I still not listening to my spirit?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat about you? I thought I was serving Him faithfully and yet He seemed to be questioning my love for Him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, I immediately responded, \u003cem\u003e“You know I love you”!\u003c\/em\u003e He then posed another question which also shook me: \u003cem\u003e“But do you really love Me”?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI now responded to His second question with greater honesty, \u003cem\u003e“Well, I want to love you”.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, His third question completely undid me. He asked, \u003cem\u003e“Do you want to love Me”?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI could only reply, \u003cem\u003e“I want to want to love You”.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy encounter with Christ that day echoed Peter’s restoration on the shore of Galilee, when Jesus asked him,\u003cem\u003e “…Simon son of John, do you love me…”\u003c\/em\u003e (John 21:17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeter was hurt (as I was), but the question revealed a level of self-awareness and honesty that was demanded by the entrustment that followed: \u003cem\u003e“…Feed my sheep…”\u003c\/em\u003e(v.17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf we are going to be faithful to the trust which Jesus has placed in us, to represent Him and proclaim His message, we must prove ourselves trustworthy. He seemed to hedge his bets when he replied, \u003cem\u003e“O Sovereign Lord, you alone know” \u003c\/em\u003e(Ezekiel 37:3).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wonder what I would have said in his position. Would I have believed that God could turn a graveyard into a living army, or that God’s word and Spirit were sufficient to turn despair into hope, or that I could be involved in the restoration? O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat about you? No wonder, the proverb says, \u003cem\u003e“…Above all else, guard your heart…”.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe health of our spiritual heart must be of the highest priority for preachers and teachers. How could he expect the Philippians to allow God to work His purpose in them, and yet at the same time work out their own salvation (Cf. \u003ca title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+2%3A12-13\u0026amp;version=NIV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+2%3A12-13\u0026amp;version=NIV\" data-url_type=\"default\" data-url_text=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+2%3A12-13\u0026amp;version=NIV\" data-prev_next_link=\"undefined\" data-page_select=\"\" data-hash=\"\" data-file_name=\"\" data-dynamic_select=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ePhilippians 2:12-13\u003c\/a\u003e)? How can we hold the tension between our reliance on God and our responsibility to God?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis kind of paradox requires an insight. And that is what Paul suggested to Timothy. But Paul started his challenge by writing, \u003cem\u003e“…you then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus…”\u003c\/em\u003e (2 Timothy 2:1).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, even though we have a personal responsibility to pass on our entrustment to others, we also have a divine empowerment to do so.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the paradoxes of our faith. The Christian life is up to God and yet down to us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs Paul put it, \u003cem\u003e“…He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. Despite his evident abilities, his primary training involved obedience to his commanding officer. He told me that those who failed to obey orders didn’t survive the first battle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul wanted Timothy to survive the conflict and complete the task, and he knew that simple obedience was the key to his future success. However, he then looked at the waves and began to sink.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus rebuked him for his lack of faith, and asks, \u003cem\u003e“…Why did you doubt…?\" \u003c\/em\u003e(Matthew 14:31). I don’t know how Peter felt at that point, but if I were him, I may have pointed out that I was the only disciple to walk on water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNonetheless, it begs the question, why did Peter doubt, or more to the point, why do we doubt?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt seems that doubt is deeply imbedded in our flawed human condition. We have a propensity to trust what we see and distrust what we can’t; to have confidence in what we know but uncertain about what we don’t; to believe the temporal yet doubt the eternal. Anxiety is made worse both by what we say and also by where we focus. A poor confession only adds to our problems, and an inappropriate focus on the future can harm our present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach day has its own concerns and its own grace, but anxiety places our thinking in the future without the benefits of today’s grace. She was looking to worship Him, and her search ended in life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think the soldiers were looking for something (an arrest, a fulfillment of a command, perhaps even a commendation from their commander), but Mary had no such agenda. She wasn’t looking for something, she was looking for Someone.
