The Entrustment #5

Are We Strong In Grace?

Are We Strong In Grace?

When Paul the apostle challenged Timothy to pass on what he had been taught (2 Timothy 2:2), he used three images to illustrate the qualities necessary to do this effectively.

A soldier must be obedient, an athlete must follow the rules, and a farmer must work hard. These character traits required Timothy to show devotion, duty, and diligence.

Timothy had to choose to do the right thing – as we all do. But Paul started his challenge by writing, “…you then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus…” (2 Timothy 2:1).

So, even though we have a personal responsibility to pass on our entrustment to others, we also have a divine empowerment to do so.

This is one of the paradoxes of our faith. The Christian life is up to God and yet down to us.

As Paul put it, “…He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me…”(Colossians 1:28-29).

God’s energy enables us to do what we are required to do.

Are we fulfilling our responsibilities of discipleship?

Are we striving to do God’s will?

Are we drawing on God’s strength?
