Guard Your Heart #6

The information age, in which we live, is a world of distraction.
We look at our handheld devices instead of looking where we are going. Signs, shopfronts, and screens all compete for our attention, until we look - but fail to see.
We are inundated with information. News updates, global disasters, local challenges, and personal opinions overwhelm us, until we hear - but fail to listen. We are here – but not fully present.
Our spiritual ‘heart-health monitor’ on our life-dashboard is flashing and beeping – but we often are too distracted to notice. If we are going to avoid an inevitable accident - we need to learn to focus.
The passage in Proverbs which tells us to guard our hearts, goes on to say, “…Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you…” (Proverbs 4:25).
We need to stop focussing on the temporal, which has brought us so much anxiety, and start focussing on the eternal, which will bring us peace (Cf. 2 Corinthians 4:18).
We need to unlearn our habits of distraction and learn to fix our eyes on Jesus (Cf. Hebrews 12:2-3).
When was the last time you read a book of the Bible from start to finish, or had a two-hour conversation, or went for a long walk without a phone, or studied for an evening - without any distractions?
