When we visit cardiologists, they will often start their consultation with questions.
What is your age? Is there a history of heart problems in your family? Do you smoke? Tell me about your diet? Do you exercise regularly?
They do this because our personal history, our diet and our lifestyle affect our heart health. A spiritual heart check requires the same inquiries.
The passage in Proverbs which tells us to “guard our heart” (Proverbs 4:23), starts with the phrase, “my son” (Proverbs 4:20). The health of our spiritual heart is founded on our personal history – our identity.
We need to know that God is our Father. We need to know who we are in Christ. We need to know that the Holy Spirit is our Companion and Advocate.
In the book of Ephesians, Paul tells us that we are chosen by the Father, included in the Son, and marked by the Spirit (Ephesians 1:3-14). These revelations are matters of the heart and so he prays that the eyes of our heart will be enlightened (Ephesians 1:18).
Do you live in the light of these revelations?
Do you find that your circumstances unsettle these unshakeable truths?
Are you confident of your identity despite your critics?
