Guard Your Heart #7

The passage in Proverbs which tells us to guard our heart, also tells us to “…give careful thought…” to our ways (Proverbs 4:23).
Like our speech, our thoughts and our spiritual heart health are connected. Jesus said, “…for out of your heart come evil thoughts…” (Matthew 15:19).
This evil thinking, which Jesus goes on to say includes immoral and slanderous thoughts, is an indicator of a deeper problem – a warning light on our spiritual heart monitor.
In other words, when we have bad thoughts, we shouldn’t just try and change our thinking, we must change our believing. Or, to use our analogy, when a warning light flashes on the dashboard of your life, don’t try and mend it - stop what you are doing and check your engine.
When Paul the apostle challenges us to “…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ…” (2 Corinthians 10:5), it is in the context of a spiritual battle.
The control of our thoughts is not as simple as replacing our negative thinking with positive thinking. Repentance and faith involve a fundamental change of heart and mind.
What does your thought life say about your heart health?
If you are struggling with negative, anxious, or immoral thoughts, what are you doing about it?
Is Jesus Christ Lord of your thoughts?
