Revelation #7

Pergamum

Pergamum

Each of the seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation had different strengths and weaknesses. So, the specific facet of Christ’s character unveiled at the beginning of each letter was suited to their particular situation.

The third letter begins, “…To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword…” (Revelation 2:12).

Pergamum was famous for its library, its emperor worship and its heathen temples and some people in the church had been enticed by the idolatry in the city.

As a result, the letter ends with a strong warning: “…Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth…”(Revelation 2:16).

The letter must have shocked the church. As we know, the double-edged sword of God’s word judges, “…the thoughts and attitudes of the heart…” (Hebrews 4:12).

Sometimes, we need a reality check. In fact, the Scriptures were written for our example and our warning (Cf. 1 Corinthians 10:11).

Do we allow God’s word to challenge us?

What warnings do we need?

What aspect of Christ’s character do we need to know better?
