S.T.O.R.Y. – Why I Don't Have A Favourite Preacher

Many years ago, I attended a church specifically to hear a well-known preacher. Unbeknown to me, a lay preacher was rostered on to speak. I was frustrated.
When he announced his topic, the Good Samaritan, I was even more disappointed. I had hoped for a great sermon on a new subject. When he started speaking, I didn’t like his style.
That’s when the Holy Spirit convicted me of my sin. I had put my trust in a preacher instead of God; had failed to honour the word of God and was arrogant enough to think I knew the parable.
The sermon that morning was brilliant. I spent the day repenting, and it changed my life.
I decided not to have a favourite preacher, a favourite passage in the Bible or a favoured style of preaching.
Instead, I would listen to every sermon and read every verse as if God were speaking directly to me.
Do your preferences limit your ability to receive God’s word?
Do you criticise a preacher’s style and so fail to hear the message?
Do you have favourite books in the Bible which inhibit the reading of others?
