Revelation #9

Sardis

Sardis

Throughout the Bible the people of God are encouraged to be watchful.

On the one hand, we are required to be ready for God’s impending action. And, on the other hand, we are required to be alert to the enemy’s activities.

In both cases, to fall asleep on our watch is a serious offence.

So, when the church in Sardis was told to “…wake up…” (Revelation 3:2), it’s a bad sign.

The letter written to the church states, “…I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God…” (Revelation 3:1).

It seems that Sardis had become complacent and failed to finish what God had started.

So, the letter starts, “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars” (Revelation 3:1).

In other words, Jesus Christ was in charge and expected them to take Him and His cause seriously.

Have we fallen into the same trap?

Are we as sleepy as Sardis?

Have we taken hold of that for which Christ has taken hold of us?

Are we like the prophets, standing on the walls – watchful and alert?
