Smyrna

Each of the letters to the churches in the Book of Revelation starts with a revelation of Jesus Christ.

These individual unveilings contain the necessary truths that are required by each church.

The second of the letters starts, “…To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again…” (Revelation 2:8).

The church in Smyrna was going through a difficult season. They were the victims of false accusations and painful persecution.

So, John reveals three truths about Christ to encourage them to stay faithful to the end: He is the First; He is the Last; and He is eternally alive.

These same truths should also encourage us. If we are going through tough times, as many of us are, we need to remind ourselves that Jesus Christ is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Cf. Hebrews 12:2).

What He has started in us will be brought to a redemptive conclusion (Cf. Philippians 1:6).

And, during the season of difficulty (and it is only a season), His Presence is guaranteed.
