The Holy Spirit #8

The Holy Spirit & Illustration

The Holy Spirit & Illustration

The Bible is filled with similes and metaphors; figures of speech which bring clarity and aid memory.

The prophets often painted pictures to illustrate truth, and throughout the gospels, Jesus Christ did the same.

For example, He regularly compared the kingdom of God to a natural object, such as a seed or a net, to communicate one aspect of its nature.

His illustrations illuminated uncommon ideas, so that the common mind could gain insight.

Of course, the kingdom of God is not a net - it is like a net (Matthew 13:47).

Similes in a prophecy or illustrations in a sermon are like windows in a house. They are not the treasures within the house, but they can be the source of light which highlights them.

The choice and positioning of these windows can make all the difference in the communication of ideas.

This is where the Holy Spirit can assist us. He can help us recall a story, choose an object, or craft an idea.

Do you pray for better ways to communicate your message?

Do you seek the Holy Spirit’s help in remembering stories from your own life?

Do you pray for an anointing in your study as well as your pulpit?
